First Trimester

Weeks 1-8

During this time, the egg travels to your uterus, where your baby will grow and develop. Things are happening fast — by 4 weeks, your baby’s heart, brain, and lungs are already forming. Eye development begins at this stage, when optic nerves appear on each side of your little one’s head.

First Trimester

Weeks 9 – 12

Your little one is moving around, but you might not feel it just yet. Believe it or not, most critical development is already complete. By the end of week 12, your baby will be 2 to 3 inches long and weigh about 1 ounce. Grow, baby, grow!

Second Trimester

Weeks 13 – 16

Welcome to your second trimester! Right about now your energy should be coming back. Many women feel great at this stage — don’t be surprised if people tell you you’re glowing!

Second Trimester

Weeks 17 – 20

Your baby is growing quickly now, about an inch every month. At 18 weeks, your baby will be around 8 inches long and weigh about 8 ounces. The umbilical cord that connects you and your baby is thickening and continues to carry blood and nutrients.

Second Trimester

Weeks 21 – 24

Your baby is still small enough to change positions a lot — from head down to feet down, or even sideways. Although it might not feel like it to you, your baby sleeps long hours, about 12 to 14 hours every day. Oh — and that funny, jerking motion you’ve been feeling means your baby has the hiccups.

Second Trimester

Weeks 25 – 28

At this stage, your baby is over 13 inches and weighs almost 2 pounds. As you get closer to your due date, your baby’s hearing and sense of touch will continue to develop. The eyes will begin to open and close, after being shut tight since way back in your first trimester.

Third Trimester

Weeks 29 – 32

Your baby’s brain and vision are developing very quickly now. The bones are fully formed, but still soft and flexible for delivery. Little fingernails and toenails are growing, lungs are maturing, and the nervous system is almost complete. Your little one has been busy going through so many big changes!

Third Trimester

Weeks 33 – 36

Now your little one has smooth skin and chubby arms and legs. It’s a good thing your baby is almost ready for life outside the womb, because it’s getting a little crowded in there.

Third Trimester

Weeks 37 – 40

Are you feeling a bit weighed down? No wonder! Your baby weighs 6 pounds or more — and will spend the next weeks putting on a few more pounds. By now your baby’s physical development is complete. Although the lungs are fully mature, the umbilical cord will support your baby’s breathing until after birth.
